Work Permit
A work permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to work legally in Canada for a specified period.
Eligibility criteria
Eligibility criteria for obtaining a work permit include:
- Having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
- The employer may need to obtain a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to demonstrate the need to hire a foreign worker.
- Meeting certain qualifications and/or experience requirements for the specific job.
- Demonstrating that the job offer is genuine and that the applicant intends to return to their home country after the work permit expires.
- Adhering to any additional requirements based on the specific type of work permit being applied for, such as open work permits for spouses or post-graduation work permits for recent graduates. Meeting these criteria is essential for obtaining a Canadian work permit and legally working in Canada.
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
The TFWP allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers to fill temporary labor shortages when qualified Canadians or permanent residents are not available. Employers must obtain a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to demonstrate the need for hiring a foreign worker. The program aims to address specific, short-term labor needs in various industries while ensuring that Canadian workers are not displaced.
The International Mobility Program (IMP)
The IMP facilitates the entry of foreign workers into Canada through work permit exemptions based on reciprocal agreements, broader economic, cultural, and social benefits. Under IMP, foreign nationals can work in Canada without the need for a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), streamlining the process for employers and workers. IMP plays a vital role in fostering global partnerships and facilitating the movement of skilled individuals across borders.
International Experience Canada (IEC)
IEC is a program that allows youth (ages 18-35) from participating countries to travel and work in Canada temporarily. It promotes cultural exchange and professional development through three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op (Internship). Participants gain valuable international work experience while exploring Canadian culture.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The PGWP is a temporary work permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to eligible international students who have graduated from a designated Canadian post-secondary institution. This permit allows graduates to gain valuable work experience in Canada. The duration of the PGWP depends on the length of the study program completed, with a maximum validity of up to three years. Eligibility criteria include completing a program of study at an eligible institution, obtaining a transcript and diploma, and applying within a specified timeframe after graduation.
